Kenwood TM-732A and Packet -- Version 1.0 KB8AOB I have successfully connected my Kenwood 732 to a KPC-3 for use on 2-meter packet and offer the following notes. Use of this information is at your own risk. Since the Kenwood 732 uses an RJ-45 connector for the microphone it is necessary to either buy an adaptor cable or construct a special packet cable for this unit. I chose the latter and determined the following pin connections. Orientation of the RJ-45 on the 732 is vertical with the RclipS to the right. (Plug J401 on schematic) N.B. -- Pin 1 is at the bottom and pin 8 at the top Kenwood 732A KPC-3 8 pin RJ-45 9 pin DB-9 Pin 1 DWN Down NC = Not Connected Pin 2 RD Row Detect ??? SP1 Center Pin Audio Out ------------------- Pin 5 Audio Signal Sleeve Ground ---------------------- Pin 9 Ground Wire: I used a very short (1 foot) piece of UTP Level 5 (Unshielded Twisted Pair Level 5 cable) planning on replacing it with a shielded variety but at the moment zero problems with the UTP. I also used a junk box unshielded mini-zipcorded mini-plug for the link to the speaker jack without problems. While I always recommend shielded cables for TNC connections it appears it is possible to use UTP in short lengths. RJ-45 Plug: It may look like you could use a standard RJ-11 plug but on closer inspection the side flanges could damage the RJ-45 socket on the 732A and I do not recommend even trying an RJ-11. While I had access to a crimper for an RJ-45 you may wish to purchase a cable with an RJ-45 installed. [Mouser (800-346-6873) has plugs, crimper, and cables with RJ-45 installed as I am sure other suppliers do as well.] 73, Rich kb8aob@kb8aob.ampr.org kb8aob@w8sp.wv.usa.noam clemens@max.chatham.edu 76074.236@compuserve.com
